ALIAS: Pipe Fox Spirit, Moonless, No-Moon
PHYSICAL AGE: Unknown
RACE: Kudagitsune
SERIES: XxxHolic
HOME WORLD: The Spirit World
APPEARANCE:
Pipe form:
Full form:
PERSONALITY:
The pipe fox is an obedient spirit that is loyal to the individuals it cares about. When it finds someone that it is attracted to, it follows them without a second thought. It has no understanding of personal space and has no qualms about hiding inside people's shirt sleeves or purses to stay with them. It is extremely affectionate, nuzzling and wrapping itself around a loved individual or object.
When one of the people it cares about is threatened by danger they cannot protect themselves from, Mugetsu becomes extremely protective and transforms. It will fiercely express its emotion through growling, not hesitating to attack if the danger becomes more immediate. However, it will stop if it is ordered to by a master or friend.
ABILITIES AND SPECIAL SKILLS:
The pipe fox spirit is a pure being of the spiritual world. Besides being able to transform into a kitsune, it can sense evil energies and malevolent spirits in both forms.
It's cleansing foxfire can burn through many impure and evil substances, such as the Joro Gumo's spiderweb. It can breathe fire in a wave, a thin stream, or a ball of fire without problem.
HISTORY: The pipe fox spirit is a rare creature. It was lured into a bamboo reed early in its life. It was tamed and became a possession of the one who owned its tube. In time, the tube was decorated and adorned with finer designs and material, becoming a far more attractive item.
Over time the pipe fox spirit came into the possession of the Ame-warashi. She requested assistance of the time-space witch to purify a group of hydrangeas that were being corrupted by the corpse of a female child. The pipe fox was given to Yuuko as equal payment to the time and effort of Watanuki and Doumiki in saving the essence of the flowers.
Quickly it came to be attracted to Watanuki, following him to school and hiding in his clothes when he left the store. After forming a close attachment toward him, the pipe fox spirit emerged in full form to protect Watanuki from a pair of parasitic wings that were attempting to steal his soul. It pounced on them from out of the air and ended up ripping them apart with its teeth.
While transforming from pipe form to full form is as natural as breathing, assuming pipe form is not so simple. It can only be accomplished by being in a location with an extraordinarily large amount of pure energy. It was only after being brought to the mountain of the Zarashi-Warashi that the pipe fox returns to normal.
Until then, it loiters around the shop under Yuuko's assistance in pipe form until Watanuki's eye is taken by a spider. It assists him by destroying the ward that the Joro Gumo sets. Its deadly foxfire is the young man's only weapon.
When Watanuki names the bird he gives as a gift to Himiwari-chan, the pipe fox becomes quite sulky and disappointed because it was not also named by the person it cares for most. Watanuki names the pipe fox Mugetsu, for its nearly indistinguishable eyes that sometimes cannot be seen, much like the new moon.
NON-CANON LORE: It is said that fox spirits are attracted into bamboo tubes and pipes by using miso, a food they particularly enjoy. Perhaps that is why their owners will sometimes find themselves wanting to eat miso more often.
Fox spirits are suspected to be the cause of diseases and so are sometimes hated for this fact. However, others can be entirely benevolent and even kind.

APPEARANCE:
Pipe form:
The long, thin body of the pipe fox is covered in fine cream-colored hair. Mugetsu has no limbs or extremities besides two small tufts that are its ears, sitting on either side of its head. Instead, its body is much like that of a small snake or a very long tail. Barely-distinguishable among much of its fur are its crescent-shaped eyes which inspired the name Mugetsu. The pipe fox is small enough to fit inside a pipe fashioned from a piece of bamboo.
Full form:
When taking on full form, the pipe fox emits a bright light that dissipates into a kitsune, or fox-spirit. It's nine fluffy tails extend like a fan behind its body, tapered closer to his body and the tails' ends and wider at their center. Its body and limbs are long and thin. The color of its fur is the same as in pipe form apart from a ruff of white fur that circles the base of its neck and upper chest. Soft and smooth across his body, the fox-spirit's hair only curls where its legs meet torso. The fur curls like flame from his joints. Surprisingly, the kitsune does not seem to have traditional paws so much as sharp claws that several inches long, like the feet of a bird.
The most noticeable feature of the fox spirit it its head. It has large, silky ears that are often very expressive of Mugetsu's emotion. When angry, they lay flat against his head as opposed to normally perked up when the fox is pleased. The fur below its chin and at its cheeks is softer and a creamier color. Its eyes are thin as a narrowed slit. It has a number of crimson red designs drawn over its forehead, eyes, and snout.
